RadioShack is an American retailer specializing in electronics, batteries and computer, audio and video accessories. Although RadioShack operates mainly through its e-commerce website, the company benefits from a network of 500 independantly-owned authorized dealer stores.
RadioShack, originally Radio Shack, was created in 1921 in Boston when two brothers, Theodore and Milton Deutschmann, opened a retail store and mail-order business to sell radio equipment and electronics for ships and amateur radio operators. It expanded to high-fidelity audio products in 1939 and in 1954, the Deutschmanns created their own brand, Realist. They had to rename it Realistic after Stereo Realist sued them. Radio Shack started to suffer from a bad image since most of its products were shipped from Japan, hence seen as cheap and of poor quality. The company was sold in the 1960s to the Tandy Corporation who was in quest for new investments. Charles D. Tandy reorganized and optimized the whole business and managed to expand it until his death, in 1978. RadioShack went through highs and lows and eventually filed for bankruptcy twice, in 2015 and 2017. The brand is now part of a holding company.
