Nordstrom is an American luxury department store chain selling men, women and kids apparel, accessories, shoewear, cosmetics and jewelry. Its offer also includes homeware, electronics, outdoor furniture and pet accessories. Nordstrom features many designers collections such as Christian Louboutin, Saint-Laurent, Prada, Gucci and Dries Van Noten. The Seattle-based company operates 117 locations in 40 states in the US and three provinces in Canada.
John W. Nordstrom immigrated from Northern Sweden to the US in 1887. He was 16 and couldn't speak a word of English. After a few years of travelling and working across the country, he settled down in Seattle with enough money to open a shoe store in partnership with Carl F. Wallin, a Seattle shoemaker he met in Alaska. Their store, Wallin & Nordstrom, opened in 1901. A second store opened 22 years later in the Seattle's University District. Nordstrom retired in 1928, solding his company's share to his sons who also bought Wallin's share when he retired in 1929. Through the next decades, Nordstrom opened stores in Washington and Oregon and became the largest independant shoe retailing chain in the US. In 1963, Nordstrom entered the women's clothing market, then added men's and children's apparel in 1966. As more locations opened, the company's business and offer expanded. The website was launched in 1998 and orders are now shipped to more than 90 countries. The first store in Canada opened in 2014, in Calgary, soon followed by Ottawa, Vancouver and Toronto. Nordstrom has always been a family business whose CEO today is the founder's great-grandson, Erik Nordstrom.
