Lucius Smith Lowe opened his first store in 1921 and named it after its location, North Wilkesboro, North Carolina. At the time, the store was selling harware, horse tack, groceries and dry goods. When Lowe died in 1940, his son Jim took over the business. In 1946, three years after Jim and his brother-in-law Carl Buchan became business partners, they decided to focus on hardware only and changed the store's name that same year: the North Wilkesboro Harware store became Lowe's Harware. A second store opened in 1949 in Sparta, North Carolina. Jim Lowe left the company in 1956 but the family name remained. Several stores opened in North Carolina the following years and by 1962, Lowe's was operating more than 20 locations. The first store outside the United States opened in Canada, in 2007.
