Burlington is an American chain of discount department stores specializing in clothing. One of the largest coat sellers in the United States, Burlington also offers a full range of women's ready-to-wear, accessories and shoes, menswear, children and baby apparel, along with jewelry, gifts, home furniture and linen. It operates through a network of 631 stores in 40 states and Puerto Rico.
Abe Milstein and his son Monroe started their company as a wholesaler of ladies coats and junior suits. In 1972, Monroe's wife Henrietta convinced him to buy their fisrt location, a former factory outlet in Burlington, New Jersey. Since the coat business is rather seasonal, Milstein started to widen his offer by adding additional clothing products, then accessories, sportswear, shoes etc. The second Burlington Coat Factory store opened in 1975 on Long Island. Ten years later, Burlington was operating more than 130 locations in 37 states. The 500th store was opened in 2012. In 2015, Burlington Coat Factory was rebranded Burlington Stores. Along with this very successful business development, Burlington has been involved in fundraising and charity partnerships including the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and WomenHeart: The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease. In 2006, Burlington launched a coat donation program called Warm Coats.
